SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre is pleased to announce the National Centre SOLARIS – Basics of Accelerator Physics taking place from Tuesday, 10th October to Tuesday, 30th of January 2025 in Kraków, Poland.

The lecture series "Basics of Accelerator Physics" offers a comprehensive overview of the principles, design, and applications of particle accelerators. This course begins with a historical perspective on the development of accelerators and an overview of their main types.

It delves into the fundamental aspects of beam dynamics, covering both transverse and longitudinal dynamics, as well as addressing linear imperfections, error sources, and correction methods. A brief introduction to nonlinear dynamics is also provided.

Interactive tutorials form an integral part of the course, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with MADX and XSuite, industry-standard tools for accelerator design and simulation. Students will engage in practical exercises, such as building sequences for SPS-like and race-track machines, matching tunes and chromaticities, and applying correction techniques to magnet misalignments.

Advanced topics include diagnostics and instrumentation, beam cleaning and collimation techniques, and the use of synchrotron light sources. The course also explores specialized applications of accelerators in medical and industrial fields.

The objectives of this lecture series are to impart a solid understanding of the physics behind particle accelerators, familiarize students with the conventions and nomenclature used in the field, and illustrate the diverse applications of accelerators in science and industry. Through practical tutorials, students will develop proficiency in using common computational tools for accelerator design and gain the foundational knowledge required to pursue a career in this dynamic field.

The course is prepared and executed by specialist working for many years in the area of Accelerator Physics, its applications, and methods development: Dr Marcin Patecki from Warsaw University of Technology.

The course will be hosted in an online form every Thursday between 10:15 and 11:45, starting 10th of October, 2024 and ending 30th of January, 2025.
